HERZLIYA, Israel, July 11 (Reuters) - A 1,000-year-old hoard of gold coins has been unearthed at a famous Crusader battleground where Christian and Muslim forces once fought for control of the Holy Land, Israeli archaeologists said on Wednesday.

The treasure was dug up from the ruins of a castle in Arsuf, a strategic stronghold during the religious conflict waged in the 12th and 13th centuries.

This is another awesome find to come from an archaeological study. I'm glad that it was archaeologists who made this incredible find, as opposed to someone who would attempt to sell off or destroy the coins for profits. It'll be interesting to see just what they manage to learn from studying the coins over the next six months. Maybe it will lead them to conduct more archaeological studies to make another fantastic find where the coins were minted.

I wonder what happened to the guy that left them there? It's quite lucky good-natured people found them, and submitted them for research, instead of trying to sell them to make a quick buck.

Odds are, the guy that left them there probably fell in battle. You know, as important as the Crusades were, it all seems kinda crazy to me, now, that people would fight so hard over reasons rooted in religion.
